The unemployment rate in Canada was 6.8% as of April 2026, up 0.2% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 6.7% below the peak from June 2020 and is on par with the long-run average.

There were 52,100 fewer full-time jobs in April 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a gain of 22,900 part-time positions, this led to a decrease of 29,200 total jobs in April.

Full-time employment was down 77,600 jobs from the peak in January 2026.
