Changes in population from migration and immigration
Negative net international immigration was overshadowed by gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 5,358 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was a decrease of 70% from the net gain in the first quarter of 2025.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 19,344 people moved to Alberta from other provinces in the first quarter of 2026, down 8.4% from a year earlier. A total of 13,338 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 7.5% from the same period in 2025. The result was a net gain of 6,006 people to Alberta’s population in the first quarter. This was a decrease of 10.3% from the net gain from the first quarter of 2025.
Changes in population from immigration
Net international immigration subtracted 648 people from Alberta’s population in the first quarter of 2026. This was a reversal from the net gain of 11,176 people from the same period in 2025.
