Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from inter-provincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 118,609 people to Ontario’s population in the fourth quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 229.9% from the fourth quarter of 2021.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 13,813 people moved to Ontario from other provinces in the fourth quarter of 2022, up 11.5% from a year earlier. More people moving from British Columbia and Quebec made up the bulk of this increase.
A total of 21,124 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the fourth quarter, an increase of 9.4% from the same period in 2021. More people leaving for Alberta accounted for most of this increase.
The result was a net loss of 7,311 people from Ontario’s population in the fourth quarter. This was an increase of 5.7% from the fourth quarter of 2021.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 125,920 people to Ontario’s population in the fourth quarter of 2022. This was an increase of 193.8% from the same period in 2021.
