Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 949 people to Prince Edward Island’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 49.9% from the first quarter of 2023.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 1,171 people moved to Prince Edward Island from other provinces in the first quarter of 2024, down 35.6% from a year earlier. A total of 1,190 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, an increase of 7.7% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net loss of 19 people from Prince Edward Island’s population in the first quarter. This was a reversal from the net gain of 713 people from the first quarter of 2023.

International immigration added 968 people to Prince Edward Island’s population in the first quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 18% from the same period in 2023.
