Changes in population from migration and immigration
Positive international immigration added to gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 2,035 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a decrease of 56% from the first quarter of 2024.
Changes in population from movement within Canada
Some 4,508 people moved to Nova Scotia from other provinces in the first quarter of 2025, down 5.2% from a year earlier. A total of 4,077 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the first quarter, a decrease of 15.2% from the same period in 2024. The result was a net gain of 431 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the first quarter. This was a reversal from the net loss of about 50 people from the first quarter of 2024.
Changes in population from immigration
International immigration added 1,604 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the first quarter of 2025. This was a decrease of 65.7% from the same period in 2024.
