Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration added to gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 6,007 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the second quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 42.7% from the second quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 6,959 people moved to Nova Scotia from other provinces in the second quarter of 2024, down 13.9% from a year earlier. A total of 5,693 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the second quarter, a decrease of 1.2% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net gain of 1,266 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the second quarter. This was a decrease of 45.5% from the second quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 4,741 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the second quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 41.9% from the same period in 2023.
