Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration added to gains from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 4,198 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the third quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 51.8% from the third quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 4,582 people moved to Nova Scotia from other provinces in the third quarter of 2024, down 3.8% from a year earlier. A total of 4,223 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the third quarter, a decrease of 9.8% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net gain of 359 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the third quarter. This was an increase of 327.4% from the third quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 3,839 people to Nova Scotia’s population in the third quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 55.5% from the same period in 2023.
