The unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador was 9.6% as of April 2026, up 0.3% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 8% below the peak from July 2020 and is below the long-run average.
There were 400 fewer full-time jobs in April 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a loss of 600 part-time positions, this led to a decrease of 1,000 total jobs in April.
Full-time employment was down 500 jobs from the peak in December 2012 but stood 41,100 jobs above the trough in June 2020.

St. John's Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador was 6.7% as of April 2026, down 0.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 6.8% below the peak from July 2020 and is below the long-run average.
There were 200 more full-time jobs in April 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a gain of 200 part-time positions, this led to an increase of 400 total jobs in April.
Full-time employment has recovered since reaching a bottom in January 2026 and now stands at a record high.
