Newfoundland Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador was 10% as of January 2026, down 0.4% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 7.6% below the peak from July 2020 and is below the long-run average.
There were 500 more full-time jobs in January 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with a gain of 200 part-time positions, this led to an increase of 700 total jobs in January.
Full-time employment was down 3,700 jobs from the peak in December 2012 but stood 37,800 jobs above the trough in June 2020.

St. John's Employment Trends
The unemployment rate in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador was 7.7% as of January 2026, down 0.1% from the previous month. The unemployment rate stood 5.8% below the peak from July 2020 but remains above the long-run average.
There were 400 fewer full-time jobs in January 2026 compared to a month earlier. Combined with an unchanged number of part-time positions, this led to a decrease of 400 total jobs in January.
Full-time employment was down 800 jobs from the peak in November 2025.
