Changes in population from migration and immigration

Positive international immigration overshadowed losses from interprovincial migration, resulting in a net increase of 31,080 people to British Columbia’s population in the second quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 42.5% from the second quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from movement within Canada

Some 21,539 people moved to British Columbia from other provinces in the second quarter of 2024, down 12.3% from a year earlier. A total of 21,941 people left the province for elsewhere in Canada in the second quarter, an increase of 4.1% from the same period in 2023. The result was a net loss of 402 people from British Columbia’s population in the second quarter. This was a reversal from the net gain of nearly 3,500 people in the second quarter of 2023.

Changes in population from immigration

International immigration added 31,482 people to British Columbia’s population in the second quarter of 2024. This was a decrease of 37.8% from the same period in 2023.
